Thousands paid to honor their pets with dignity and were handed lies instead—now is the time to demand oversight and protect every grieving family from this kind of cruelty.

Hold Funeral Fraudsters Accountable for Shattering Pet Families

For over three years, pet owners across western Pennsylvania entrusted their beloved animals to a man who promised care and compassion. Instead, he discarded them like garbage.

More than 6,500 families were deceived by Patrick Vereb, owner of Vereb Funeral Home and Eternity Pet Memorial. He took their money—over $650,000 in total—for private cremations and respectful burials. But prosecutors say he dumped the bodies of dogs, cats, and other animals into landfills and returned ashes that weren’t even theirs1.

Fake Ashes, Real Grief

Some ashes came in unmarked Ziploc bags. Many had no tags, no documentation, no trace of the pet whose memory they were meant to honor2. The betrayal didn’t stop there. Vereb allegedly used the ashes of large dogs to mimic multiple cremations, dividing them up and handing them out to unsuspecting, grieving families3.

Whistleblower Sounds the Alarm

His actions were exposed by a whistleblower who witnessed pets left in garbage bags, blood pooling on floors, and freezers meant for remains left unused4. A spreadsheet of victims showed thousands of small animals had no crematory records—no trace of a dignified farewell4.

Veterinarians Shocked, Families Reeling

Many veterinary offices unknowingly partnered with Eternity Pet Memorial. Clients who believed their pets were honored with care are now facing the unimaginable: a second wave of grief and the realization they may have nothing of their companion left5.

Oversight Is Urgently Needed

There is no statewide system to regulate pet funeral services in Pennsylvania. There is no mandate for tracking remains. No requirement for proper documentation. No law to stop this from happening again. That must change—now.

Pets are family. When we say goodbye, we deserve truth and respect. This cannot be allowed to happen again, not in Pennsylvania, not anywhere.

The Petition

To the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,

We, the undersigned, are calling on your office to take immediate and permanent action to ensure oversight, transparency, and integrity in the pet funeral industry across Pennsylvania.

The recent revelations surrounding Eternity Pet Memorial are nothing short of horrifying. Thousands of grieving families trusted a licensed funeral director with the remains of their beloved animals—only to be handed ashes that were not their pets, or nothing at all. The betrayal was deep, the grief renewed, and the trust irreparably shattered.

Pets are not disposable. They are family. At the most vulnerable time in a pet owner’s life, they deserve compassion, not exploitation. The state’s lack of regulation surrounding pet cremation and memorial services enabled this tragedy to unfold over years. We cannot allow it to happen again.

We urge you to implement and enforce the following measures:

  • Mandatory licensing and inspections for all pet funeral providers
  • A standardized tracking and identification system for pet remains
  • Clear record-keeping requirements and spot audits
  • Transparency in subcontracting and crematory partnerships
  • Penalties for deceptive practices and consumer fraud

These steps will protect both grieving families and ethical providers who strive to do right by the animals in their care.

By acting now, you will restore public trust, uphold basic decency, and ensure that no pet or pet owner ever faces such cruelty again. This is how we build a more compassionate and accountable future for all.

Sincerely,
