Working from safe workshops or more conveniently from their homes, a caste of printers, known as chippas, stamp the fabric with hand-carved wooden blocks for incredibly unique designs.

A kind of mud resist printing process called dabu allows chosen areas of a design to be reserved from dye. Indian dabu print artisans possess unparalleled expertise in the use of natural plant dyes and mordants, which help create a rich color by allowing the dye to adhere to the fabric. By using the combination of mordant and mud resist stamping, artisans are able to create truly unique and complex designs.

This craft of dabu printing is a skill passed down through generations, making the production of these prints a family endeavor. Artisans who have learned the skill of dabu printing tend to create traditional and classical varieties of prints which are generally considered the most authentic.
