NOVICA Artisan Kavita Cooper
Kavita Cooper
My name is Kavita Cooper. I was born in 1960 in Gujarat, not far from the Sabarnati River.
As a child, I admired my mother's saris that she had collected from different regions of India. As a student of history, I was fascinated with arts and crafts, which inspired me to want to revive as many of our unique handicrafts as possible. They are not found anywhere else in the world.
"I eventually decided to work with colors and patterns on fabrics, especially natural fibers such as cotton, silk, wool and linen. These textiles are comfortable and elegant. I now have my own workshop and work with a team of weavers. I especially enjoy creating different embroideries, motifs, prints and combinations.
"I focus mainly on design and work closely with the weavers who create the shawls. Often, we add the motifs with master artisans who specialize in India's legendary block prints. Our designs range from the traditional to the contemporary.
"My inspiration comes from the temples, paintings and sculptures all over India. I am amazed how every region has developed unique forms of weaving, prints and embroidery.
"Our textile arts help educate the children of the artisans who collaborate with me, and they all have access to better medical care. I teach others who are interested in learning about weaving and embroidery.
"I’m very proud of my culture and wish to spread the beauty of this craft all around the world."
