NOVICA Artisan Sowalayha Siddiqui

Sowalayha Siddiqui

I was born in the city of Lucknow. Those who know me well consider me to be a quick learner, a hard worker, and a happy person.

Being a creative mind, I always wanted to do something of my own. During my young years, I used to work on fabrics and garments owing to my knowledge of chikankari and needle punch embroidery.

"I had to put a halt to my career due to family commitments. But when my husband passed away, I had to work again to support my family. In 2001, I started my own textile workshop with my nephews, who were already working in rug-making, which attracted me a lot. I also knew I could get support from my family members.

"I usually work with wool and cotton due to their availability in a variety of types and colors. I believe nature is the biggest source of inspiration and it has given a new direction to my work.

"I am fortunate to have 25 artisans who collaborate with me, and have been able to generate employment for them to support their family and educate their children. Today, I want to reach out to shoppers worldwide and give my art a new horizon to explore."
