NOVICA Artisan Francisca Perez
Francisca Perez
I was born in a small town in the mountains of Chiapas. This area is known for its handwoven textiles with intricate geometric motifs. Our colors are predominantly reds or blues, and we work on the backstrap loom with the addition of embroidery.
The backstrap loom dates from the pre-Hispanic era and is also known as the waist loom. It's a very simple loom but can result in very complex and beautiful textiles. It involves a rope attached to a post, tree or wall, and a strap at the other end that the weaver fastens around her waist. Wooden rods form the heddles and the artisan controls the tension by leaning forward and back. This gives her total control of her work.
"My designs are mostly embroidered cotton handbags, cosmetic bags and cell phone bags handwoven on the backstrap loom.
"One part of my work is based on sharing this knowledge with visitors from other countries. I love being a spokeswoman for my culture and my work.
"I think of myself as being a firm person. This is why each detail of my embroidery is fundamental for me. I see every color I use as a reflection of what Mexico is —her skies, her earth, her people, I try to combine a good background with quality threads for the embroidery, This is the trend in my work.
"I want all my designs to communicate these feelings. I want to share the concept that something as simple as a handbag has a life behind its handiwork and colors. Each is a bit of history that you can bring into the modern everyday world."
