NOVICA Artisan Nury Guevara
Nury Guevara
I was born in a part of Cuzco that abounds in historical treasures. Our local church houses treasures of this region where colonial paintings and sculptures of the saints abound.
I'm a creative woman. I'm serious, candid and super-responsible, especially with my work.
"At one point in my life, I became very ill with anemia and this was even more complicated because we live at an altitude of more than 12,000 feet above sea level. But I recovered I dedicated much more time to restoring Cuzco's ancient churches.
"I became interested in jewelry when I saw an advertisement for jewelry courses in downtown Cuzco. I decided to sign up. I never missed a class. I loved it! My teacher taught me day after day with patience and a positive attitude. I learned quickly and couldn't wait to begin crafting my own creations.
"I decided to set up a workshop, but it was very complicated. Without a doubt, this is a job for the courageous! For those who dare take the first step in this direction, I'd say give yourself time. But when I made the decision to become independent and become my own boss, I found I was able to develop abilities I didn't know I had.
"I love what I do because I can work from home where I've created a special space for it. This area is filled with tranquility. I can relax here to craft my jewelry in peace. This lets me fully express my creativity.
"One of my greatest dreams is to become a successful jeweler. I want to be the best representative of my town ever. I want to be able to always live doing what I love and to create my own design brand known throughout Peru and the rest of the world.
"For me, this is an art that uses a thousand kinds of techniques and each artisan can use any of these. We can make our chosen jewelry techniques our own form of expression and we are free to create beautiful and original designs.
"I'm inspired by the textures and by designs that show a creative identity of their own. I also find inspiration in the beauty of life that surrounds me."
