NOVICA Artisan Flor Jimenez
Flor Jimenez
I'm Flor Jimenez. I was born in San Cristobal de las Casas in the state of Chiapas. Thanks to my town and its colorful handicrafts, I discovered a desire to create my own designs. I do this in a special way… with pompoms made of wool.
I first began by observing. Then I started crafting them, even though I had no training. I've always loved the colors and textures, and their unique way of decorating any space.
"As I learned and practiced, I began creating my own color combinations to make marvelous ornaments. But I realized how important it is to practice, to practice patiently. I said to myself, 'Okay, it's not as simple as it looks.'
"Oh well. All I could do was smile and continue working. But this taught me the value of observation and to value my strong points while strengthening my weaker ones.
"San Cristobal de las Casas is still my greatest source of inspiration. Day by day, I simply look at all the colors and I go to work. I want my designs to transmit the essence of my people.
"When I began this project, I found creating color combinations that look fresh and original is a challenge. Although my work is unique, I found it enriching to see the work of others and, in this way, know how to distinguish my own designs.
"I work with a group of people who all have very diverse activities, from selecting the yarn to combining colors, and we share these tasks.
"Today, my next goal is to share this artisanal work with others. I want to create a consciousness that art is a wonderful medium to express our creativity and the ideas that come from the deepest part of the heart. Sometimes, we don't realize we are capable of doing so."
