NOVICA Artisan Gamaniel Esmit
Gamaniel Esmit
“Hello, I am Gamaniel Esmit Ubaldo. I was born in the beautiful province of Huancayo, specifically in the most important city of Peru’s sierra. I consider myself to be a happy, fun, persevering, and innovative man. I love being able to create new things, not only in my work, but in every aspect of my life.
“Like many others, I have lived through difficult times in my life. One of them--the one that has affected me the most--was the loss of my grandfather. Unfortunately, he left me when I was very young. We loved each other very much. I was his first grandchild, and it was very hard to lose him and not be able to enjoy his company any more. But, I trust that he is in a better place, and I know that he is protecting me and offering guidance in everything that I do.
“You could say that I carry textile art in my veins. All generations of my family have worked in this ancestral handwoven art, maintaining the traditions of the Inca. I grew up surrounded by yarns and looms, watching my artisan parents and grandparents. My family taught me this art, though I have also always liked drawing.
“The key to being able to carry out this work that I do is to never surrender. If something truly impassions you, it is always possible to try it. Working on looms is something that requires ability and a lot of patience in order to obtain the desired result. Quality is my personal trademark.
“What I like the most about my art is being able to express myself freely. This art allows me to be myself and give life to my imagination, transmitting it to the tapestries and rugs that I make. I see my work as more of a diversion than a challenge; the more difficult a piece, the more excited I become. When I approach the loom, I feel happy among the fibers and colors.
“My inspiration comes from our culture, such as the writings, histories, and experiences of the Andean villages, which make me very proud of the place that I come from. I want to share it with the world.
“My greatest dreams are being able to finish my studies as an entrepreneur, gain a lot more experience in the textile world, help my family succeed, and help those who need it, always creating the best in my art. I am very happy to be a part of the Novica family, and to be able to enjoy and share my art with more people. Thank you for this great opportunity.”
