NOVICA Artisan Fabiola Rojas
Fabiola Rojas
“My mother is a lover of plants, so I grew up surrounded by them. One day my mother bought two macrame hanging flower pots, and I was in love with them. They attracted my attention, but, being a very small girl, I never imagined that they were made by hand. Nevertheless, I remained fascinated with this technique, even though I did not know where I would be able to learn to make them.
“I am Fabiola Rojas, a macrame textile artisan. I taught myself this craft, thanks to the incredible artisans that have shared their knowledge through books and YouTube videos. I spent many hours practicing, patiently learning each knot, forcing myself to work day and night until I improved my macrame techniques and felt comfortable with each one of my designs. A vital part of my apprenticeship was experimenting with different types of cords and by observing first hand the advantages and implications of each type of cord; this has helped me a lot in improving my technique and the pieces that I create.
“What I like the most about macrame is that, apart from being very relaxing, it allows me to be in my own world, exploring my creative side freely. Making mistakes has been my greatest teacher, teaching me to be patient and to better know my ability and talent. I like simple, geometric forms a lot; their colors and contrasts lend themselves to the possibility of combinations.
“One of my dreams is to be able to unite my two passions: the conservation of nature and the creation of new macrame pieces. In the future, I see myself growing as a biologist and as an artisan, meeting and coexisting with people who smile and experience well-being through my ideas and artwork.”
