NOVICA Artisan Wayan Weta
Wayan Weta
My name is I Wayan Weta, born in Ubud on May 4, 1974. I'm married and we have two daughters and a son. My children make me happy, they give more spirit and bring me more responsibilities in life. My father and most people in the village where I live are wood carvers. I learned to carve wood statuettes when I was in elementary school. After school, I carved the very simple elephant statuettes and from then on, I focused on elephant statuettes only, which lead me to build my shop.
Eventually I decided to move from elephant themes to designs with a display purpose, since many times we encountered difficulties in delayed large orders with our elephant statuettes.
"I want to create something different to the traditional themes coming from Ubud. So I started carving sculptures designed solely to display jewelry. I work with traditional tools and jempinis (Chinaberry) wood with a glossy or burnt finish.
"I work with the help my family and also other wood carvers. Though I am a master carver, now my main job is to design and quality control while my wife does the marketing.
"I hope that by joining Novica my sales will increase so I may expand my shop."
