If you are a heartworm-positive dog in an overcrowded shelter in the South, your chances of making it out of the shelter are slim.
According to the American Heartworm Society, Louisiana is one of the leading states in heartworm infection rates in this country, putting heartworm-positive shelter dogs at a higher risk of euthanasia due to length of care, space required, and the prohibitive cost of treatment.
The Animal Rescue Site and Greater Good Charities, in collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim, need your support to fly 75 dogs (including 12 heartworm-positive dogs) to freedom on this month's Save-A-Heart flight on April 29.
The dogs on this flight are at-risk pets; without the flight, they might never find their loving homes due to the overcrowding that often happens in shelters. Sending these pets from under-resourced shelters to shelters with empty spaces will give them a second chance at life AND the adoption they deserve.
They need your help- Donate now to Save a Heart!
Boehringer Ingelheim, the maker of NexGard® PLUS chews and HEARTGARD® Plus chews, covers medical costs and provides the necessary product to treat shelter dogs. All heartworm-positive dogs have been treated in advance of the flight and are asymptomatic.
With your support, in addition to the heartworm-positive dogs being relocated to safety, thousands of heartworm-positive shelter dogs will receive medication in Louisiana and Alabama via the Save a Heart initiative, saving even more lives.
Meet some of the pet passengers on this month's flight below!

This sweet mama was surrendered along with her four puppies when her owner could no longer afford to care for them. Panda, an Australian shepherd mix, is just two years old and asymptomatic heartworm positive.
She and all of her puppies will catch a ride on the Save A Heart Flight for a second chance. While her puppies will surely be quickly adopted, Panda will get treatment to beat heartworm disease before finding a loving home.
Help fly her and her puppies to freedom!

Meet Sissy!
The six-year-old hound was left to roam free around neighborhood which resulted in her having multiple litters of puppies. The neighbors stepped up to help the dog when her owners left her to fend for herself.
Sissy was spayed, had a lipoma removed from her chest, and tested positive for heartworm disease. This sweet girl has been through a lot and is ready to get the treatment she needs before finding a new family.
Help fly her to freedom!

Meet Lou!
Lou is super friendly and sweet; he is so curious and loves to explore outside in the yard. He has been very playful with both people and the other dogs here at the shelter. Even though he is an asymptomatic heartworm positive dog he is living his best life. We are so thankful he can be transported through the Save a Heart initiative and receive the care and treatment he needs before being adopted into a loving home.
Help fly them all to freedom!
Every month we fly a group of deserving pets. Help us fund the next Flight to Freedom now! Just $5, helps cover the fuel costs of flying a pet 125 miles towards safety.
In shelters across the country, highly adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized just because the shelters are overcrowded. In other areas, shelters have a shortage of adoptable pets. We're transporting these pets to shelters where they're immediately adopted.
This month's Good Flight will transport at-risk dogs and cats to safety!
*Due to many factors including pets being adopted prior to a flight, receiving shelter capacity, and pet health, the final number of pets on a flight may be different from totals quoted above.
