Mother's Day is a day when many moms receive gifts of chocolate from their loved ones. Dark chocolate, in particular, is a favorite among many. However, recent testing conducted by Consumer Reports has revealed alarmingly high levels of cadmium and lead in popular brands of chocolate bars.

This discovery raises serious concerns about the health risks associated with consuming chocolate.

Dark Chocolate Bar Ingredients in Question

Out of the 28 different dark chocolate bars tested from popular brands, only five were found to have levels of contaminants that would be considered safe for daily consumption of one ounce.

Some well-known brands like Tony's, Lindt, Hershey's, and Hu were among those found to contain relatively high levels of lead. The exposure to lead has been linked to cognitive impairment, especially in children, as it can lead to developmental issues and lower IQ, reports the American Academy of Pediatrics. In adults, it can result in reproductive problems, high blood pressure, and neurological complications, according to a study published in the International Journal of Health Sciences.

In addition to lead, high levels of cadmium were detected in products from Lindt, Dove, Beyond Good, and others. Cadmium is considered a cancer-causing mineral, and prolonged exposure has been associated with kidney disease and fragile bones, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Consumer Reports found one dark chocolate bar from Trader Joe's with high levels of both lead and cadmium. The higher presence of heavy metals in dark chocolate compared to milk chocolate can be attributed to its higher cacao content, which can be contaminated either from the soil where it is grown or during post-harvest processing.

Health Risks and Potential Impact

Consistent exposure to lead and cadmium can have severe consequences for both children and adults. Children may experience compromised brain development, while adults may face hypertension, kidney damage, and reproductive issues.

The potential impact of these health risks should not be underestimated. Lead, for instance, has been shown to cause cognitive impairment in children, hindering their learning abilities and intellectual development, the Cleveland Clinic reports. The consequences can have long-term effects on their educational attainment and future opportunities. Additionally, adults exposed to lead may face a greater risk of heart disease and stroke, leading to significant health complications.

Similarly, cadmium exposure poses significant threats to human health. Prolonged exposure to this toxic metal has been associated with kidney disease, which can lead to kidney failure and the need for dialysis or transplantation, according to a study in BMC Public Health. Furthermore, cadmium can contribute to the development of fragile bones, increasing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis, a condition particularly concerning for older individuals.

While there may be no current federal limits for lead and cadmium in most foods, one major concern with heavy metals is their ability to accumulate in the body over time, leading to health issues due to repeated exposure. As a result, it is important to be aware of this risk and consider options with lower levels of heavy metals.

Manufacturers have the power to take responsibility and proactively address these potential health hazards. Consumers, too, play a crucial role by advocating for safer products and making informed choices to minimize their exposure. By raising awareness about the risks and demanding accountability from the industry, we can strive towards a safer and healthier future, ensuring that the enjoyment of chocolate does not come at the expense of our well-being.

A Positive Step Forward

Hershey's Chief Financial Officer, Steve Voskiul, has acknowledged the presence of lead and cadmium in their dark chocolate bars and expressed a desire to eradicate these heavy metals completely.

"Depending on where you source, you may get relatively more lead or cadium in West Africa versus South America, but in both cases it’s a naturally occurring ingredient," Voskuil told Reuters. "We would love to eradicate it completely and continue to look for opportunities in the process, is there more we can do there."

This statement from Hershey's is an encouraging sign that they are willing to address this issue. However, it is crucial for the company to publicly commit to a specific timeline for taking action.

"It's possible for companies to make products with lower amounts of heavy metals—and for consumers to find safer products that they enjoy," Tunde Akinleye, the Consumer Reports food safety researcher who led the testing project, told Business Insider.

Hershey's Influence and the Wider Impact

As one of the largest chocolate companies in the world, Hershey's has significant influence over the chocolate industry. The impact of Hershey's actions goes beyond their own product line. When a prominent industry leader like Hershey's takes proactive steps to address the issue of heavy metals in their chocolate bars, it sends a clear message to other manufacturers that prioritizing consumer safety is paramount. This ripple effect can lead to an industry-wide shift towards safer and more transparent practices, benefiting consumers around the world.

Moreover, Hershey's commitment to reducing lead and cadmium levels can have far-reaching effects on the cocoa supply chain. By working closely with cocoa bean suppliers and implementing stringent quality control measures, Hershey's can exert pressure on farmers to adopt safer agricultural practices and minimize the presence of heavy metals in the soil. This not only safeguards the health of consumers but also ensures the well-being of cocoa farmers and their communities.

The influence of Hershey's in the chocolate industry gives them a unique opportunity to lead the way in establishing higher standards for product safety and quality. By taking bold steps to reduce lead and cadmium levels in their chocolate bars, Hershey's can help build a safer and more sustainable future for the entire industry.
