A three-year-old dog named Sweetheart was surrendered to the shelter in severe pain with vaginal bleeding and discharge. She was lethargic, dehydrated, and with no interest in food.

The intake counselor realized her symptoms could be from a life-threatening condition called pyometra. It is curable with emergency surgery and care.

Sweetheart walked hunched over in pain and was rushed to a clinic to be examined. X-rays confirmed closed pyometra and blood work revealed elevated white blood cells and liver values.

She has been started on antibiotics to battle the infection and fluids while she waits for emergency surgery.
