Hurricane Melissa Leaves Path of Destruction Across Jamaica

Category 5 Hurricane Melissa made landfall in New Hope, Jamaica on Tuesday as one of the strongest hurricanes in history.
The powerful sustained winds of 185 mph combined with heavy rainfall left a path of destruction as the storm crawled across the island. Roofs were torn off, homes were leveled, trees were uprooted and are now blocking roads.

Most of Jamaica is without power, while the western side of the island is underwater. Black River Hospital is flooded, and Montego Bay Airport took a direct hit with water pouring in through the destroyed roof.
People are unable to reach loved ones to see if they are ok. Prime Minister Andrew Holness has declared the island a "disaster area" and said there is "significant damage".

With communication down, the true extent of the damage caused by Hurricane Melissa is still unknown. The loss of life and livelihood is also unknown at this time, but Jamaica’s Energy and Transport Minister Daryl Vaz told Sky News the damage is "catastrophic" and "not much survives a Category 5 hurricane."
Rescue efforts are underway but downed trees, power lines, and flooding are making it difficult.
Lost and injured animals are also in need of emergency care, shelter, and food until they can be reunited with their families.

Greater Good Charities is working with partners on the ground to send vital supplies to people and pets impacted by Hurricane Melissa.
