I transferred from Los Angeles to Denver for work. The first time I went out behind our Denver office, I had a strange thought: A cat was going to come to me here. I’d never admit that to someone who isn’t a pet person, but the thought kept returning. After a couple of years, I forgot about it.

Five years after that first thought, our warehouse worker came to me. A cat had her head stuck in one of the dumpster’s drainage holes, he said, and he thought she was dead.

I went out back and found a tiny kitten no bigger than my hand. I gently worked her ears free, and then her head popped out. At first, she was all teeth and claws. But after about five minutes, she began cuddling against my neck. She was covered in grease and dirt, and she was skin and bones.

A year later, she’s a spayed, vaccinated indoor cat. She loves attacking the sliding door whenever a bird or squirrel visits the feeder, and she cuddles with me in bed every morning. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel blessed she found me.
