A blue galaxy of stars surrounds Rio's Christ the Redeemer in an original decorative box by Paulo and Eliana. They find inspiration in one of Brazil's most celebrated landmarks, shaping the statue's silhouette with a cluster of hand-painted blue cosmobolas with raised textures. The black wood box features a blue interior with two compartments.

Paulo and Eliana

Paulo found in Eliana the perfect partner for personal and professional success. "Our art is like us: happy, multicolored and simple," says Eliana.

"Leaving family and friends in São Paulo to move to Rio de Janeiro was a difficult decision, but we had to do it in order to better develop our art. Now we are happy living in the city that has welcomed us – we have made new friends and have found a public that has received our art.

"When we started, back in São Paulo, we tried to find stores interested in selling our products, and the owner of one of the first shops we encountered realized our potential, but suggested we had much to learn as far as the marketing of our products. She generously gave us our first lesson on how to approach stores.

"In 2003 Paulo was working in handcrafts and I worked for a company. I helped Paulo to craft his designs in the evenings and over weekends. A few years later I was able to leave my job to be entirely dedicated to our craft with our art printed as wall décor and decorative wood boxes.

"We refer to our art as Cosmobola ('cosmic balls') because it features innumerable diminutive balls of ink clustered in high relief in all of our designs. They are like a dynamic representation of the relationship between humans and the cosmos. These cosmic balls can be clustered over such Brazilian images as Christ Redemeer and Sugar Loaf Hill.

"Our plans for the future include promoting our art throughout Brazil and beyond our borders, thus making our dream come true, which is to be able to live off our art, as well as train and employ people interested in learning this art form.

"Our main material is wood, and we're planning on using other materials such as ceramic and metal. Who knows, maybe one day we can even work on walls! We also plan to continuously create new designs and keep surprising our customers.

"We developed this art form inspired by our passion for art. Paulo has always enjoyed designing and I love to paint. Combining our passions we developed the techniques we use today. We enjoy seeing the surprised expressions of customers, admirers and friends who are fascinated with our work.

"Our inspiration comes from everything we have experienced and know, as well as art books and visits to museums. We constantly take courses to learn how to apply our technique to other materials.

"At home, united by arts, chores are divided. Paulo's favorite thing to do is to design, and finds it challenging finding the adequate techniques to apply his designs. I love to paint, glue the tiny balls, and networking to promote our work. I enjoy being in contact with other people, it's always fun and a source of inspiration for new designs. I also find it challenging finding the adequate techniques to apply our designs.

"It gives us a great sense of satisfaction to be able to craft a type of art that is unique and has found great acceptance."

Shop all NOVICA products

NOVICA was started with a dream to create a better world for artisans, because a better world for artisans is a better world for all.

Along the way, the founders of NOVICA discovered something very important - as artisans around the world succeeded, there was also a visible and profound impact on the communities around them.

Your purchases are that powerful. They directly and indirectly provide for education, help with health care, fund basic needs, support children, preserve disappearing arts, and of course, spread happiness around the world.

The founders of NOVICA had a vision of the future that is not one of mega factories producing cookie cutter products for all to cheaply consume. Instead, a bright future that celebrates artisans who take the time to create an item by hand. A future where time is protected, where stories are told, where unique details are honored. Love, respect, inclusiveness become driving force.
