Update (August, 2019)

I have practiced this beautiful art of jewelry since 1998. Taxco, in the state of Guerrero, has been one of my greatest inspirations. Throughout these years we have shared our designs with you, and this has allowed us to cross borders and expand.

We love your work with Mexican artisans since, in continents such those comprising Latin America, so rich in culture and tradition, it is of utmost importance for artisans that our work be made known. They say that the greatest wealth of a country is its people, so what better way to make them known than through art?

We have fulfilled our dream of providing jobs for more people, hands that support us to create this magic. We already have more than 20 people on our team. Now we are developing a collection of bronze jewelry that we hope will soon reach you.

Original Artisan Story

Hello, I'm Albert Ickenroth. I was born in the Netherlands where I studied economics as well as art appreciation. I've always loved the great masters like Van Gogh and Rembrandt. In 1976, I took a vacation trip to Mexico and fell in love with the people, the music, plant life, wildlife and folklore of this beautiful country. And so I stayed.

As fate would have it, I found work as a designer in a world-renowned papier maché workshop. There I taught techniques and procedures unknown in Mexico and developed new styles. After a few years, I opened my own workshop where I began to experiment with new designs in papier maché as well as in gold and silver jewelry. In some cases, the jewelry includes papier maché.

My designs are always related to the fauna of this magical country. They have been used to decorate international restaurant chains, and some of my works have appeared in advertising spots for major credit cards. I always sign each piece so the buyer can be assured that this is my work.

To create a piece of jewelry, I begin by sculpting the design in clay. From this, I make a model in wax and cast a plaster mold. Then I cast a second piece in wax, carefully adding the small details by hand. I use the lost wax process in my works, crafting the jewelry in silver. To apply gold, I first treat the silver with enamel in the areas that will retain their original color, then I electroplate the piece with 22k gold. Finally, I clean and polish it.

For me, creating is an essential part of my life. If you don't continue experimenting and learning something new, you might as well just go back to bed.

Shop all NOVICA products

NOVICA was started with a dream to create a better world for artisans, because a better world for artisans is a better world for all.

Along the way, the founders of NOVICA discovered something very important - as artisans around the world succeeded, there was also a visible and profound impact on the communities around them.

Your purchases are that powerful. They directly and indirectly provide for education, help with health care, fund basic needs, support children, preserve disappearing arts, and of course, spread happiness around the world.

The founders of NOVICA had a vision of the future that is not one of mega factories producing cookie cutter products for all to cheaply consume. Instead, a bright future that celebrates artisans who take the time to create an item by hand. A future where time is protected, where stories are told, where unique details are honored. Love, respect, inclusiveness become driving force.
