“We are the Contreras Family, originally from Dolores Hidalgo in the state of Guanajuato. Our father José Luis Contreras was one of the pioneers of Talavera-style ceramics in Dolores. Through its teaching and discipline, each member of the family is dedicated to preserving this artisan technique. Not only among members of the family, but also anyone who wants to learn from the heart.
“It was throughout our childhood that the interest grew, in how we could contribute new designs, colors, shapes and products for common use and also for décor. It never ceases to amaze us that something so simple and common that is part of our land, such as clay, can be made so beautiful. It can be transformed into a piece that complements your life, and not only that, but also preserves a centuries-old tradition. I think that is what we are most passionate about in our work as an artisan family.
“The growth process has been a learning process in every way; It has taught us to work hard and together. We review each of the processes of each piece and involve ourselves from the heart in each one of them. Our father tells us that this is the only way to have mastery in whatever you do. We have also faced challenges; but each of them was overcome, with a stronger family bond as the result.
“The mud we use is extracted from the Sierra de Guanajuato, and we use various lead-free pigments. We are mainly inspired by the colors that this technique expresses; how to create new mixes and improve details. We believe that we always have that vision in the workshop.
“We promote a beautiful art for which Dolores Hidalgo is known internationally. We want to further grow our workshop, and continue creating new designs while maintaining this beautiful tradition that characterizes us and defines us as a family.”

NOVICA was started with a dream to create a better world for artisans, because a better world for artisans is a better world for all.
Along the way, the founders of NOVICA discovered something very important - as artisans around the world succeeded, there was also a visible and profound impact on the communities around them.
Your purchases are that powerful. They directly and indirectly provide for education, help with health care, fund basic needs, support children, preserve disappearing arts, and of course, spread happiness around the world.
The founders of NOVICA had a vision of the future that is not one of mega factories producing cookie cutter products for all to cheaply consume. Instead, a bright future that celebrates artisans who take the time to create an item by hand. A future where time is protected, where stories are told, where unique details are honored. Love, respect, inclusiveness become driving force.
