Smaller pets often get overlooked when it comes to shelter donations.

Hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, hedgehogs need these essentials to survive and flourish, just like any other rescued furry friend! 

When these small animals end up at a shelter - whether it be from neglect, injury or owner surrender, they need just as much attention and care as other pets. While shelters often receive items for cats and dogs, smaller pet donations are usually few and far in-between. Although tiny, these cute critters do need essential supplies, and some fun ones too! 

Your gift will ensure rescued hamsters, guinea pigs, and other small pets get all the supplies they need while they wait to be adopted, including:

• Chewing toys that help keep teeth from getting too long and helps animals satisfy their natural chewing instinct.
• Litter boxes to keep their cages clean.
• Hay holders and food dishes to keep food off the ground and sanitary.
• Hanging water bottles for fresh water to drink.
• Cotton nesting bedding material for a comfy and cozy environment.
• Bags of treats
• Hide huts so they can feel safe and secure in a new environment.
• and, of course... Exercise toys! No rodent cage would be complete without a wheel to run on! 

Impact Stories:

Candy and Kit Kat, came to HSPPR together after their owners could no longer care for them. They spent a lot of time hiding amongst their bedding but came out to explore their new veggie burger and side salad. These sweet sidekicks were adopted together. 

Porky and Oreo, two senior guinea pigs at Brookings Regional Humane Society, had a blast playing with some enrichment toys that were sent to them.

Ludwig and Gino, 8 month old guinea pigs, were surrendered to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. The shelter was "thrilled to receive some enrichment items for the small animals" in their care. These sweet little guys were adopted soon after this photo was taken.
